Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I look forward to teaching 4-5th grade students next year! I worked with these students as their kindergarten teacher. Some students were learning English for the first time in kinder. Some were learning how to read and write. Some experienced their first time in school! It will be so amazing to see how much they've grown social-emotionally and academically, and get reacquainted with their families!
I look forward to being a part of their last years at our elementary school and getting them ready for middle school!
My Project
A Maker education provides open access to learning and furthering creativity through empathy. I need to get my students ready for the 21st century STEAM future with this kind of mindset! At the Maker Collective Tier 1 Boot Camp Professional Development at Pathfinders Summer Institute in Indiana, I will be learning how to integrate maker education principles and philosophies with the core curriculum I teach. I will use my new knowledge and skills to plan lessons in engineering and design.
Your donation to my Professional Development will support my desire to learn more deeply about Maker engineering and design challenges so I can create exciting lessons for my students!
I plan to design engineering challenges tied to literature we will be reading: "Wonder," "Fish in a Tree," and "Out of My Mind." I'm hoping my students will be inspired by these books to think outside of the box and empathize with people who are different but have the same basic need as every human: to belong. Employing critical thinking skills, my students will design a process, service, or product that will help to improve the lives of the characters we will be reading about in literature. They will communicate their ideas through the written word and presenting their ideas to other classes.
