Mrs. Jackson from Ruston LA is requesting instructional technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need these items to make communication booklets in order to express their wants and needs independently.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our community may be small but we have students who have a huge desire to grow and learn. There are over 500 children in our 3rd-5th grade school who come from many diverse backgrounds. We have a large ESL community, and 16% of our students participate in the special education program. Students participating in the special education program have difficulty learning new vocabulary, and communicating using the vocabulary. Our teachers desire to grow our students leadership skills in and out of the classroom.
These materials will be used to make communication booklets for students who have difficulty communicating their wants and needs using traditional verbal speech. These students want and need to express their thoughts and desires and need to do so through pictures. Each student will have their own booklet to take with them wherever they go throughout the day.
The booklets we will make are for students who communicate and think using pictures; making it essential that they have a portable and study device to take with them throughout their school day and beyond.
The students have various needs such as autism, down syndrome, learning difficulties, and motor impairments that limit their ability to communicate to their full potential. This leaves the students behind their peers in both academics and social situations.
The materials will be used to make booklets that are laminated, bound, and have movable pieces. This will allow the books to be used in multiple settings as the pictures will be transferable due to the Velcro. For example, if a child is in music, then pictures with music will be used. We have plans to make these books for each child to use in every setting in the school-classroom, music, art, cafeteria, P.E., and the playground. As teachers, we often feel that we do not have enough supplies for each student to have their own way to communicate. These booklets will allow the teachers to focus on communicating, rather than worrying if we have the right picture just for that setting since we will have the booklets ready to go in each situation for each student. This will also allow us to make books that are highly individualized for each of our students needs.
