My students are imaginative and fun-loving middle school (7th/8th grade) kids. My students are part of a self-contained classroom (life skills) as part of the special education department. In addition, most come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community here in Anchorage, Alaska.
Many of my students do not have the ability to learn online.
Within my small classroom, I have students with a variety of individual needs related to their disability. Some of the disabilities in my classroom are: autism (mild to severe (nonverbal)), cognitive impairment, seizure disorder, multiple disabilities, fetal alcohol disorder. Some of my students are highly affected by situations of high stress/anxiety and are unable to effectively and appropriately cope. Most of my students are really confused by what's happening and miss the safety of their daily classroom routines.
Most of my students depend on worksheet packets and whatever materials they have at home. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are eager to learn.
My Project
Please help me give my students learning materials for home and distance learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of my students require a structured daily routine and do not regularly leave the home, often because of their individual disabilities. My students need a variety of art supplies, comprehension books, and other hands-on learning materials to build projects based on learning while also providing them with a healthy and educational way to cope with anxiety and stress that has resulted from not having structure or a normal routine.
My students need materials for hands-on activities to complete during the summer months of extended school year services.
These materials will be mailed directly to my student's homes.
