My students need one more GoPro camera, a production slate, various GoPro mounts, and some storyboard paper and colored Sharpies to make homework rock hard for Rock Club!
My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my fifth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.
My Project
My little rockers can actually rock! They will melt your faces off with our guitars, basses, and drum set. Kids play all the instruments. I don't play any of the parts for them. We recently had several projects funded for two GoPro cameras and video editing software. But right now they just don't know how to create killer music videos or understand the time management involved.
I am going to assign Rock Club some homework that will help us make some great videos of our spring concert this March, but this homework isn't eye-rolling, time wasting busy work!
This project is requesting one more GoPro camera (so we'll have one for the bass, the guitar, and the drum set) various mounts for the cameras, a production slate so we can say "Wipeout, take ONE" and clap the board together. For the homework aspect we've included storyboard paper and Sharpie markers. Students will work together during class to brainstorm ideas and then take home a storyboard notebook and a pack of pens to work at home and draw out ahead of time what each scene/section should look like, what angles/views the cameras should get, and what instruments should play each section. Once the students work at home to do this, it will save time during the video shoot because we'll know right away what we need. The more mathematically inclined kids will put together a pay sheet so they'll understand that time is money and if we waste time during the shoot, we have to "pay" our workers more. Video shoots need to run like clockwork and stay on budget! My students will combine technology (cameras) math (pay sheets) and art (storyboards) to create an amazing final product of a KILLER video from our spring concert.
