As my first year comes to an end, I am preparing for my second year teaching 5th grade! We have 53 4th graders moving up next year and I am so excited! They are a great group of kids who are excited to learn! We live in a small, rural town where the single high school has "drive your tractor to school" day! We are surrounded by farms, and we also live near a lake, so many of my student enjoy water sports and swimming.
We are a Leader in Me school, which is a program that takes the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and turns them into kid-friendly habits.
This group has been learning and utilizing those 7 habits since they were kindergartners! Recently we had our annual Leadership Day. On Leadership Day, the students run the day while community members and families visit our school. They had various roles. Some of the students were greeters, some were speakers, and many were "Sharpen Your Saw" club leaders! It was an awesome day!
My Project
I teach Virginia history, and I often hear students complaining about how boring it can be. I really want to spruce up my social studies class by incorporating books and hands-on activities and relating the subject to each student in a positive way. With books, such as Blood on the River and the Virginia Mystery books, I can help students understand and relate to the subject more easily through adventure-filled novels. These items will be used next year, which will be my second year teaching.
I cannot wait to incorporate more reading into my social studies class to build better reading skills!
I believe that, through reading, students can discover that history can be fun to learn!
We also need Speed Mathematics to learn how to use mental math more effectively and efficiently. Mental math is an important skill that all 5th graders can benefit from!
