Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading materials that children from more affluent families take for granted.
Our children have a great hunger for knowledge, but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite.
Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.
My Project
In order to become good readers, you need to practice. Kindergarten forms the foundation for reading. As I work to instill in my students the love of reading, these items will help make reading fun. The materials will be used once a week for what we call Flashlight Friday. During this time, the lights go out and my students will be able to grab one of the copies of the ten requested books, a flashlight and their stuffed animal. I am asking for three packs of flashlights, multiple copies of ten books and two storage hammocks for otr stuffed animals. With these resources, my students will then find a quiet place to practice independent reading. Students will be able to practice reading images and developing a number of early print-related strategies – searching, cross-checking, self-correction, and rereading.
Literacy is the best gift that we can give our students.
I know that my students can achieve anything once they unlock the code to reading. Setting the stage for this magic to happen in kindergarten is my top goal.
