Mrs. Hunt from Anchorage AK is requesting Educational Kits & Games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students new games to make fitness fun, social, and can be done at home with their family as well.
My students are from very different backgrounds. My two schools are both in Anchorage, AK where it can be very hard to get out and be active in the winter. They are Title 1 schools where all students receive free lunch due to economic disadvantages. They value being active and treasure having new and engaging learning experiences. They struggle at times with not having enough time to move or enough knowledge in learning how to be active in a way that suits them. I am trying to instill in them the power of being active throughout their lifetime and to teach them that being active can be fun if they find an activity that they enjoy. My mission is to teach physical literacy to my students and give my fellow educators the tools to help make time in the classroom active as well.
Fitness can be a tough part of my lesson for students. They quickly get bored of laps, push-ups, and sit-ups. When students hear fitness their eyes roll and their excitement levels drop.
I want to bring back excitement for fitness through fun games that students can also play at home.
Many students have played Jenga, Uno, and Twister at home. Some may have scrabble at home as well; however, I know that classrooms use scrabble to help increase student engagement. My goal is to show students how much fun fitness can be by changing games they already know and own into fun fitness activities to be done in class and at home. I want to see students laughing while having fun with friends and family playing fitness games.
Jenga will have fitness activities written on each block. The block you pull is the activity you perform. Connect four will have fitness activities written on each tile. When you place a tile your partner must do the activity. Scrabble tiles can be used as a whole group activity. Working within small groups, each member runs out one at a time to collect a tile and try to spell words. Points can be given for longest word, most words, most points for words, spelling words (PE or classroom), and the team that wins gets to choose a fitness activity for everyone to do. Twister is a good physical activity. Uno can be played by adding a fitness activity to each color, the number is how many times you perform the activity. When you play a card, you do the fitness activity. Number bingo is the number of times you do a fitness activity and Alphabet bingo can be done by doing an activity that starts with that letter.
