Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When I was first moved to teaching first grade at my school, I was thrilled. I was going to teach my students how to read! I envisioned small groups of students working together, heads bent over their books and throughly engaged.
However, I soon learned there was not enough money for any of the reading extras my students greatly need. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, and many get served a free lunch or receive other social services. They often do not have extra money for books or reading materials at home, so their only access to reading is often in school.
Each day, I group my students into centers to give them a chance to explore words and reading in a hands-on way. However, at the moment the only things I can give them are photocopies of worksheets or lists to copy off the board.
My six year old students need activities that are hands-on and fun for them to engage in. I want them to have colorful manipulatives so they can see how fun it is to play with letters and sounds. I also want them to have transparent letters so they can use my overhead like teachers to work cooperatively and help each other learn and grow.
Since letter sounds and short and long vowel sounds are difficult to master, I would also like my students to have access to fun activities that would be both engaging and educational.
Your donation would make a world of difference, not only to my twenty students this year but to groups of six-year-olds for years to come. Thank you so much for your support!
