Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are industrious, passionate, whimsical and questioning. They work hard and are willing to try new things. They want to make a difference in the world today. They are also tested to death in school and when not being tested, they are preparing for the tests. I would like for them to have a part of their day to develop their creative skills, to struggle, to persist, to know that mistakes are not the enemy and that there is not always one right answer.
The opportunity to share their creativity and STEM skills to people outside of school motivates my students to exceed expectations.
They love explaining their thinking and progress and the more they talk/demonstrate, the more they learn.
The students at my school have many economic disadvantages, but that should not define who they are and what they can become. They are bilingual, energetic, have supportive families, and they care about their community. With all these assets they are only lacking the materials and opportunities to be innovators in the modern world.
My Project
The MakeFashion Edu STEAM Runway Event will be an opportunity for my students to express themselves through fashion tech. Students work in teams to design, construct, and present their e-wearables to a public audience. The process is highlighted during the event and each team has a story to tell. These items will expand the possibilities for creation and innovation because the students will have the tools and materials to move ideas from their minds to the physical world.
Although all students are invited to participate, fashion tech is a great doorway for girls to enter the worlds of engineering, coding, robotics and electronics.
Because girls and people of color are under-represented in these areas, we are missing out on a huge pool of talent. This project will bring some of that talent into the light. By learning to use these items and the design process to create and show their projects in a public venue, my students will have skills that will allow them to explore avenues that they may not have even known existed.
The sewing supplies such as muslin, thread, scissors, iron and board will be used to construct clothing, With the figures and the dressmaker form used for prototyping. The microcontrollers such as Flora and Circuit Playground Express will then be programmed to get the desired effects from the EL wire and NeoPixel Rings. The conductive thread and embroidery hoops will be used to sew LEDs and make circuits on the design. External phone chargers and batteries are used to power the lights and controllers and will be hidden away in a pocket so as not to detract from the design.
