My class has 21 energetic and enthusiastic learners. We are an urban public school with many of our students receiving free or reduced price lunch. We come from many different backgrounds, and all bring something different and unique to share with the group.
In our classroom, we do a lot of work in small groups.
Students receive individualized instruction that is selected based on where they currently are with certain skills and their goals. We do this through centers with different games and activities, guided reading and math groups, and with the use of technology. My students are eager to learn, and small group instructions helps to meet them where they are.
My Project
Currently when I do small group instruction, many students prefer to sit on either side of me. It is a lot easier for me to see what they are doing and assist them when they are next to me. My small group table right now is a hexagon shape, so it can only comfortably fit 5 kids and myself. I usually am spending most of my time kneeling besides students, to spread my time evenly between the students in the group. It is hard to see, hear, and reach all of them from my seat , and frequently more than one student needs my attention or help at one time.
This horseshoe table will make sure all students are seen and heard during small group instruction.
With this table, I can see what all students are working on at once. It will be much faster and more convenient to go back and forth between students, therefore maximizing instruction time. I will also be able to comfortably fit up to 8 students at this table, which would allow me to have bigger groups. It can also serve as another area in the room for students to work when small group instruction is not happening, expanding flexible seating options.
