My students in my Logo Robotics program are technologically inclined, dedicated and hardworking. They stem from varying socioeconomic backgrounds, but for most of them technology is not readily accessible.
My students are excited to take on new challenges every year in designing and building new robots to accomplish different tasks.
This year is no different where we have managed to enter the First Lego league Competition, where young innovators practice imaginative thinking and teamwork.
They try to do the best they can, with the limited technological resources we have. However, with enough resources I have no doubt they could reach their full potential and goals.
My Project
Every year for more than a decade, we have found a way to enter the First Lego League competition (FLL). The competition entails three categories, core values, research project and robot performance. We have always found a way to satisfy our technological needs including borrowing laptop from other departments or bringing in personal devices. This year the personal laptops are in bad shape and is more of a hindrance than help. Most times are spent trying to get the old laptops to function than getting the actual tasks done.
The Acer Aspire laptops will help my students prepare for the First Lego League (FLL) competition due to the fact that they are fast, light and durable.
The students will use the laptops for multiple purposes, such as preparing the research portion of the project as well as the core value portion and the robotic portion. The theme this year is “Into Orbit” Students will identify and focuses on solving real-world problems such as surviving in space, food safety, recycling, energy, and more using STEM concepts, plus a big dose of fun. To investigate their problem, it is imperative that the student have the ability to go on websites as well as create documents and slideshows for sharing their findings and solutions.
Students will use the laptops to design the core values poster which is required for the core values judging session. The poster can help your team present their successes in an organized format. With a well done poster the judges are better able to understand student's process of Discovery, Integration and Inclusion, In the (Robotic Games) students are required to design a robot using Lego Mindstorm kits and program it to accomplish specific tasks relating to the theme “Into Orbit,” To accomplish this, the laptops will prove invaluable.
