This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Welcome to our kindergarten classroom! My students love listening to stories. Recently our cassette player broke on our beloved listening center, and we are now only able to play books with CDs, which we do not have. Listening centers bring books and activities alive for kids!
My students live in the city of Harvey, Illinois.
We are a low income school district with a high level of enthusiasm for learning. Currently I have 21 students in my classroom. They love to learn and they absolutely love going to stations. They do not realize that I have carefully planned various learning activities that to them seem like they are playing games. When our listening station cassette player broke last week, we were devastated! I only have old books on tape from when our librarian was getting rid of them years ago. The kids still loved those books. Being able to pick up a book and connect print to what they hear is amazing for kindergarten students. Being that they cannot read quality books on their own, using a listening station enables them to do that.
My Project
My students need books with CDs, a display stand, and a listening center phonics program for our listening station. Using these materials, my students will be able to listen to quality books independently with their peers. They listen to the stories, respond to them after with an activity I plan, and discuss the book with their peers. They are building fluency skills by hearing stories read to them with expression and rhythm. With the display stand, books will be displayed right at the listening center to be able to choose books that interest them and keep them organized for groups. Using the listening center phonics program, my students will be able to complete phonics lessons based on their individual needs without my assistance.
Donating to this project will enhance my students reading abilities leading to greater achievement in literacy.
A listening center with high quality books and a phonics program will foster independence, develop word recognition skills, and enhance their creativity. The phonics program looks amazing for differentiation and letting kids have the ability to learn from their mistakes without being in front of the classroom, which can hurt their self esteem and learn at their own level.
