it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Craving exposure to art! As the art teacher at an urban international studies high school in a high-needs, culturally diverse community, I want to grow and expand my students' visual literacy which will undoubtedly improve their verbal literacy. It is our goal as educators at our school that every student graduate ready for college.
Our school occupies a very old building and has minimal resources due to funding. We do not have a computer lab available for classes. I have exhausted the art exemplars available to me in poster and transparency form. In addition, I do not have the equipment to show whole class PowerPoint presentations or project art images online that relate to our topic of discussion or current/upcoming project. My students need opportunities to experience art and cultures other than their own to grow their cultural awareness and literacy in an ever flattening world. Nurturing their visual and verbal literacy now is critical to expanding their view of the world and their plans for college and beyond.
With the addition of an LCD projector and pull down screen to the art program, my students' knowledge of world cultures and art will grow greatly. Largely because of their socio-economic status, my students do not have exposure to life and happenings outside of their community. Having the opportunity to project large images or take virtual art class trips to museums and other destinations of interest will expose my students to a myriad of new ideas, cultures, and art processes and techniques. Through whole-class dialogue about the projected work, students will learn there are varied responses to a work of art, they will develop important literacy skills for the 21st century, and imagine their role in making a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.
YOU will ensure a quality education in and through the arts for a struggling population who craves artistic expression and knowledge of world cultures. YOU will make it possible for my students to envision the possibilities for and rewards of artistic expression, collaboration, and communication. YOU will provide a vibrant, inspiring window to world cultures and art, challenging students to think critically, synthesize, analyze, and create an equally bright future for themselves, their families, and community.
