Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school where 98% of the population is economically disadvantaged. We have gone from a school of focus to a fully accredited school in three years. The students work hard daily and are doing so much extra work as a majority of them are second language learners. The parents work hard to provide the necessities for their children. Therefore, the parents do not have much money for anything extra for their children. The teachers provide a lot of materials for the students such as school supplies and even clothes and food if the child or family needs it.
My Project
Our world is always changing and adapting and my goal in my classroom is to help my students adapt to this ever quickly, changing world. One way I hope to do this is by using technology in my classroom everyday. It is much easier to do this when all of my students have their own device. My goal is to eventually have enough iPads to be 1:1 in my classroom so every student has their own device.
My students love to use iPads when they are learning!
The other day I used iPads in groups to play a Kahoot game. One student said "This was so fun, can we do it again?" Kahoot is a game where I put questions on the website and the students choose their answers on their device. Unfortunately, because some of our devices have stopped working, we had to work in groups.
I also use an online reading application called getepic.com so students can read a variety of books online. I truly think this will help them because the SOL requires students to read online. The students thoroughly enjoy reading books on the devices. When they are done with their work, the first thing they ask is to read on Epic.
Another program I use in my classroom are QR cards. This is a set of cards on reading and math concepts. The students use a whiteboard to answer the question. Then they use the QR reader on their device to check and see if their answer is correct. It's a very engaging way for students to practice their reading and math skills!
