My Students
I teach remedial math classes in a high school with over 1200 students. Many of the students in my class qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students in my class have special education plans.
Most of my students enter the remedial math class not liking math, it is my job to make engaging lessons and prove to them that they can be math rock stars!
Once they start to feel successful it is amazing what these kids can accomplish!
My Project
For many students, math was fun until we added the alphabet! I teach remedial algebra and my students often times end up thinking of math as a mystery, a painful mystery. I try to use hands-on learning and problem solving as much as possible to help students to make connections to their everyday lives.
This project will help my students to see that balancing equations isn't mysterious, it is intuitive and meaningful to their lives!
Students will use physical scales and weighted objects, in this case plastic fruit, to make the connection between their concrete understanding of the world and the abstract representation that is algebra.
