I teach all-day Kindergarten in a growing and diverse school community. The children we serve come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and many families have been impacted in recent months by the decline of our state's economy.

Our state is experiencing one of the largest budgetary deficits in the nation. As a result, K-12 education has endured a reduction of millions of dollars in funding. Because of these cuts, there is no money for supplemental materials. Many of the students are ready to read, but I don't have materials for them to practice high frequency/sight-words. We call these words "Star Words".

Our class needs hands-on activities such as games and puzzles to reinforce the "Star Words". Games and puzzles add another dimension to the students' reading practice, so learning will become more solid and their word recognition will become more fluent. When children are fluent readers, they can concentrate on the content they are reading rather than figuring out how to read the words they see.

Your generous donation will allow our students to have the materials that are unavailable to them otherwise. Being able to practice the "Star Words" on a daily basis in such a fun and motivating way will help them develop fluent reading skills. Fluent reading skills are the foundation for success in all other subject areas. You will make it possible for my students to realize their hopes, dreams, and wishes through your contribution to our "Star Word" project. Thank you!
