Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with ESL 6th graders in a poor socioeconomic neighborhood in the South Bronx. Many of my students are from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Their families have made enormous sacrifices for their family to bring them here to the United States.
My students are amazing.
They show such great resilience. They choose not to be products of their environment. Many of them start with a negative attitude toward school, but once they see the love and compassion inside the room, they are changed forever.
My Project
Thanks to many generous donors, my flexible seating project was funded. Our room was granted the addition of a rug and some flexible seats and pillows. It has turned out to be a very safe and popular space in the room. But we still have some room for more seats.
I would like to keep the rug clean and our custodial staff does not have a vacuum.
I am asking for a vacuum to clean and maintain the space. I would also like to allow other students to enjoy this space with three more bean bag chairs. These chairs will allow students an opportunity to sit and read more comfortably.
