I am a 3rd grade special education teacher in an inclusion classroom at a large school in Queens, NY. Of the 23 students in the class, 10 of them are special education students. It is my wish to have a set of "mailboxes" for my classroom. This is my second year teaching inclusion. Last year, my co-teacher had a set of literature sorters or mailboxes, which was a very effective, organized way to distribute homework, notices, and work to go home. However, we are teaching different classes this year and I no longer have the mailboxes in my classroom.
The mailboxes have many benefits. Currently, my co-teacher and I just hand out notices and homework sheets. However, all of these papers can get very disorganized when the students are packing up. If the windows are open and the wind blows in, the papers fly around the room. The students often end up with 2 copies of one page and none of another because their pages have gotten mixed up with the ones for the child next to him or her. At least one student a day says that they didn't get all of their homework sheets or notices. When work is returned to the students to take home, it often gets shoved into their desks not to be found until their desks get cleaned out. If we had mailboxes, we could put all the work that they have done into their mailbox and they could place it right into their folder at the end of the day along with their homework for the day. Mailboxes would also help out when a student is absent. The work they missed could be placed in their mailbox to be completed when they return to school. Furthermore, the students often return notices and bring letters from their parents as well as field trip and Scholastic Book Order money in. If we had a set of mailboxes, the students could place these things in a teacher mailbox so that way the students could get settled in more quickly in the mornings instead of walking around the room to hand something to my co-teacher or myself.
I truly believe that having mailboxes in my classroom would be very beneficial to the students. It would help them become more organized and cut down on the amount of students missing homework because they didn't get the right papers. Teaching students to be organized at an early age is a very valuable lesson. Please consider funding my proposal for a set of mailboxes to help my students become more organized. Thank you very much!
