My ninth grade English students are unique individuals that come from diverse backgrounds. As a low-income, high poverty urban school, my students arrive at our school from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. We have students who have come from approximately 30 different countries and speak at least 23 separate languages. They bring with them their own personalities, histories, and interests that help make our classroom community an energetic place. While my students face multitudes of hardships, their resiliency is inspiring and motivates me to work hard for them. Whether it is through more materials, unique learning experiences, or simple supports, my goal is to do whatever I can to support them.
What makes these students so amazing is their positive attitudes, motivation to improve, and the ability to use their differences as ways to teach each other.
Every year we work together towards group and individual goals to develop ourselves as better readers, writers, students, and humans. On paper, my job as their teacher is to provide them with the literary skills they need to be successful in our world, but I find that through our journey together it grows into so much more.
My Project
As part of our new Creative Writing course, we will be spending the year working on learning to write, address, and send letters! Students will be challenged once a week to write various types of letters and greeting cards to their peers, their role models, public figures, and themselves.
Letters are a fun way to spread kindness and strengthen our writing skills!
For many of my students, communication does not go beyond a quick text, an Instagram comment, or a filtered Snapchat. Not only is this an opportunity to show someone in their life that they care, but it is also a chance for them to learn an important real world skill.
In order to make this happen, we need some supplies! My goal is to create an inviting station in my classroom to spark student interest and creativity. Various types of colorful note cards and envelope sets are needed so that students have a template for any individual and occasion. Lined paper and blank envelopes are needed for more formal letter writing and stamps are needed to send some of our messages out beyond the walls of our school!
Finally, I've requested nice pens for students to use during our weekly activity and storage containers to keep everything neat and organized in our new station.
