My students are an amazing group of people who try hard every day to do their best to learn while they are at school. They are amazing because they honestly come to school every day ready to learn in spite of the many challenges that they face at home or in the community.
These students come from varying and diverse backgrounds.
We are a title 1 school. We live in a small rural area of less than 30,000 people. 50% of our students come from low income families. Most of the families that live in our community commute 40-60 minutes one way to get to work.
My Project
My 5th grade students are in a rural area where they don't get to experience some of the things that other students get to see and use. My students come from low income families. There are over 50% of my class that are considered title 1 students. These students have never seen a magnifying glass let alone a seeing or even using microscope.
My 5th graders have not had a normal school experience since 2nd grade.
Covid-19 has created all kinds of interruptions to student learning. 1/3 of my class didn't see the inside of a classroom for at least a year and a half. They haven't been able to go one field trips in 3 years, to see things they wouldn't normally get to experience in class. My students are so far behind. This year we are trying to catch them up on everything they have missed for 3 years.
This project will get microscopes so that my students can see the world in a different way. It will motivate them to do their work with hands on activities that will engage them in learning about their science standards. We have new science standards with little curriculum and no supplies to help us learn these standards in our classroom. Microscopes would help us with our matter and cycling of matter in the ecosystem units. We would be looking at plant cells, looking at different things that have gone through chemical and physical changes close up to see how they changed, etc.
