Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Math is a difficult subject for so many students, not to mention not always very fun for all to participate in. The daily routine of learn a lesson then practice some problems needs a makeover.
I teach a great group of eighth grade students that come from a variety of different disadvantaged backgrounds.
My school is very diverse in where they come from, but very close in their goals and dedication. Many of my students struggle to buy school supplies and to have everything they need to be prepared for class each and every day. These students work very hard in order to learn and better their lives but they do not always have everything they need for projects or even to participate in daily activities. Our school is working very hard to bring up low test scores and is showing great improvement over the past two years and we would love to continue the growth.
My Project
Interactive classrooms allow students to use resources in classroom in order to enhance their learning. I like to have posters around my room that students are able to use to help them when they forget how to do something or if they need some assistance. Posters are more valuable to students when they are student created, because they learn while making the posters and they remember what they did while they created the posters more accurately when they look back at their own work.
I would love to have all of the supplies I need for students to be making posters on a regular basis. Posters can be made to show a process, different ways to solve a problem, or define important vocab words but regardless of what is on them, we are unable to make them without supplies. It would be great for students to be able to make posters for every unit we study in class. We need poster paper, markers, colored pencils, meter sticks, construction paper, and other basic supplies to make this happen.
If my students have the opportunity to be creative and use a skill they have to help them remember math, their scores will grow very quickly.
Creating posters will help my students to learn more, remember more, and enjoy school more making them want to continue their education through and beyond high school. These supplies will have such a great positive impact on my students and what they are able to do in my class and with their lives.
