I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a 2nd grade Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique Dual Language Immersion program whose goals include helping to foster children’s (1) development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish, (2) acquisition of knowledge in all academic subjects, and (3) understanding and appreciation of other cultures, while at the same time inspiring self-esteem and critical thinking. I am thrilled to be part of the Dual Language Immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak and listen in both Spanish and English, as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards.
Our school is in Program Improvement for the seventh year in a row, we are a Title I school, and we have many socioeconomically disadvantaged students as well as a high percentage of second language learners.
My 2nd-grade students are at the critical age. They are learning strong fundamental academic skills. What they learn this year will affect the rest of their educational experience, and so failure is not an option.
My Project
My students really enjoy math! It is, after all, one subject which overcomes language barriers. While math may be a favorite subject for my students and one that is relatively easy compared to learning to read and write in a foreign language, my students nonetheless struggle to memorize the addition and subtraction math facts, as well as to learn the new math strategies and critical thinking skills required by the Common Core Math Standards. In 2nd grade many children are unfamiliar with these methods and they prove tedious and frustrating to learn without hands-on manipulatives to make the methods come alive. With these math manipulatives, my students will be able to practice these new math methods in a fun and interactive way. I am confident that having access to such engaging and child-friendly tools will not only help them learn these math concepts and move them toward math mastery, but will also encourage their continued love of mathematics! TouchMath's multisensory approach and sequential strategy, specifically, will help my students improve math comprehension and mastery. In fact, according to Curriculum Specialist, Marc Breimer, "There's a great peace of mind knowing that the TouchMath program is not only pedagogically sound but has the research to backup its success."
Help to facilitate my students' grasp of the new rigorous math concepts and strategies through these fun and interactive tools!
I want all of my students to be crazy about math and to maintain their love of the subject. With the hands-on math manipulatives, my students will have exciting, interactive tools with which to practice and reinforce their knowledge of math skills both at home and at school! You can help make a huge difference in my students' mastery of and love for math!
