Help me give my students supplies for our classroom Makerspace stations! They will hone their critical and creative thinking skills using supplies such as Cubelet robotic blocks, Sphero robotic balls, green screen video equipment, and a forensics kit!
My students are part of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. WMS is a suburban school in Elmore County, Alabama. Most of the students come from middle to low income families. The GATE program at WMS strives to provide opportunities and enriched experiences beyond the traditional classroom program.
In the GATE program, students have opportunities to learn skills related to higher-order thinking.
They are given time to pursue independent studies in their own areas of interest. They also have chances to gain an understanding of the world’s people, their cultures, and their relationships to each other.
GATE classes emphasize student-initiated learning and offer academic challenges through enriched content, long-term projects, and interaction with intellectual peers. The GATE curriculum includes humanities, literature, science, math, visual arts, critical thinking skills, technology, and research.
My Project
I am a Gifted Education teacher for sixty five 5th and 6th grade students. I see each of these students once a week for a 3 hour block of time. Since our time is so limited, I strive to make every minute we have together meaningful and productive. By creating a Makerspace in our classroom, the students can be totally engaged in learning during their entire stay in the gifted education classroom.
The Makerspace approach to learning challenges students to explore, create and invent.
In order to do this, students need a wide variety of materials and resources. This DonorsChoose project will help to expand the collection of supplies we currently have. I am requesting Cubelet robotic blocks, Sphero mini robotic balls, Lego building supplies, green screen video materials, and a forensic science kit. As students complete activities and projects in their Makerspace stations, their creative and critical thinking skills will be strengthened, and their confidence will be enhanced tremendously!
