My students need computer coding and building supplies for our classroom Makerspace stations! They will hone their critical and creative thinking skills using supplies such as Legos, K'nex, Cubelets, Bloxels, and Makey-Makey invention kits!
My students are part of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program. The GATE program strives to provide opportunities and enriched experiences beyond the traditional classroom program.
In the GATE program, students are provided opportunities for learning the skills related to higher-order thinking; experience an understanding of the world’s people and their relationships to each other; and provide an independent quest of knowledge in areas of interest.
GATE classes emphasize student-initiated learning and offer academic challenges through enriched content, long-term projects, and interaction with intellectual peers. The GATE curriculum includes humanities, literature, science, math, visual arts, critical thinking skills, technology, and research.
I am a Gifted Education teacher for eighty 5th and 6th grade students. I see each of these students once a week for a 3 hour block of time. Since our time is so limited, I strive to make every minute we have together meaningful and productive. By creating a Makerspace in our classroom, the students can be totally engaged in learning during their entire stay in the gifted education classroom.
The Makerspace approach to learning challenges students to explore, create and invent.
In order to do this, students need a wide variety of materials and resources. This
DonorsChoose project will help to expand the collection of supplies we currently have. As students complete activities and projects in their Makerspace stations, their creative and critical thinking skills will be strengthened, and their confidence will be enhanced tremendously!
