First grade is a year of incredible growth. My students come into school at varying levels and it is so amazing to see them transform into little scholars. Coming from Kindergarten they are just beginning to read and write and by the end of the year they are often reading chapter books and writing pages and pages of their own work.
I want my students to love being in school so they can succeed!
I teach at an urban school in San Diego, California. We are a diverse community of learners. Our school is an International Baccalaureate school that focuses on problem based inquiry learning. I teach my students to be globally minded, tolerant, respectful, communicators, thinkers, reflective, and cooperative.
Creating a classroom environment where students feel at ease and safe is my biggest priority. I am constantly looking for different tools to help my students succeed academically and emotionally and feel connected to our classroom community.
My Project
These magnetic letters will support each student in word making activities during our rug time and guided reading time. Each student will be able to have their own set of letters to create a set of dictated words. In addition, the letters will help them monitor for a visual and auditory match (or mismatch) during reading.
This multi sensory approach will provide increased student engagement as well as additional support to students with reading disabilities.
The storage rack will allow students to be more independent and cut down on transition time so we can maximize our word study instructional minutes.
