Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school where all students receive free breakfast, lunch, and many dinner, based on their families’ income. Although we are considered a high poverty school, we are also a high academic performing school. This is due in large part to the hard work of students, teachers, parents, and staff. In order to continue on this path to success, both students and teachers need the supplies essential to do so.
This being said, asking parents to donate items is not always feasible, so teachers rely on using their own money, or using what the school has to offer to fill classes with necessary and extracurricular materials.
Unfortunately, with budget cuts each year, money has to be spread thinly and we don’t always have the supplies needed.
This is where generous people like you can help. Any donation, big or small, can make a difference in a classroom like mine. Both my students and myself thank you in advance for your contribution to education.
My Project
Studies have shown that students learn best with manipulation of materials, and science is one of the areas that lend itself to full on exploration.
Kids are natural observers and full of curiosity, so I want to build on those innate abilities through the study of science.
Teaching at a school with almost all minority, low income, and second language learners, this exposure to the sciences is crucial. Many do not travel far from the city they live in, and do not get to experience science in the real world, so it is our job as teachers to make sure that they learn about it in school. In third grade one of the standards we teach children about is forces. I would like to do this through hands on experiments that not only let the students learn the material, but actually experience it and see it with their own eyes. Some of those exploration activities include building a slide out of cardboard and testing a variety of materials, such as foam, metal bottle caps, plastic buttons, and sandpaper to see how friction affects the speed, building paper bridges to see which design would support the most weight, exploring the force of pushing and pulling by building paper hoppers with rubberbands and seeing how the design affects the height it can jump, exploring the properties of ring magnets and the invisible force that affects them, as well as other exploration activities. I am positive that they will remember and learn from this kind of hands on science much more than they would from a book alone. We have already begun some exploration with the materials we have and the students love it. With your help I will be able to expand those learning opportunities to larger projects.
