Middle school kids need many different ways to express themselves and what better way to do so than Magnetic Poetry. We've all played with magnetic poetry words before-they're like magnets(duh)-they draw you to the words. I want to give my 7th graders the same opportunity to be creative, to write some original material, to become an author. At my school, I teach about 80 kids a day. My class, Communication Skills, would be a perfect place to have Magnetic Poetry kits used on my eraser boards. I can let students use it for making poetry or picking out nouns/verbs, etc, or as story starters. The possibilities are endless. There are Magnetic Poetry kits designed for students and this addition to my classroom would be a major help toward connecting with students who learn by using sight or manipulatives. The first project my students will accomplish with the magnetic poetry kits is to create an original poem while working in a cooperative group. The poem will get published on our weekly bulletin board and each group's poem will be given to another group to allow them to adapt/edit it to their preferences with a possibility of a future posting on the bulletin board. The use of manipulatives and cooperative groups during the first week of school will help with the all-important bonding process of students. The publishing of their poetry will provide gratification and a sense of ownership in the process. The magnetic poetry kits are perfect for allowing students the opportunity to create original poems and work with their peers.
