Help me give my students individual hands-on learning enrichment to broaden their understanding of math concepts, whether in person, virtual, or working remotely.
Currently my school district is teaching 100% remotely while students are working at home or daycare. We are a Title 1 school in a rural community, with all students receiving free meals. Internet access is limited to many homes, making remote learning challenging for students. My class consists of 15 students that have yet to walk into our classroom and only see me over an iPad screen. Their first year of school was disrupted by the global pandemic, and now their second year is starting the same.
I want to give my students a sense of normalcy because no matter where they are learning, great minds can bloom.
Magnetic Math will provide the resources needed to enhance our virtual math lessons, and provide individual manipulatives to foster a strong foundation in math.
My Project
Magnetic Math provides resources for my classroom to create a sense of normalcy in virtual learning while providing students with their own manipulatives to use whether at home or school. Recording videos for math lessons can be tricky for first graders needing to visualize the concepts being taught. Having giant magnetic manipulatives like the number counters, base ten blocks, and pattern blocks allows students to clearly see objectives being taught over the screen, or at their desk in class. Giving each child their own base ten blocks, hundreds board, and ten frame allows students to participate and investigate concepts while keeping health and safety number one.
Magnetic Math will illuminate remote learning for students working at school or at home through individual enrichment pieces and giant magnetic manipulatives for a sense of normalcy.
First graders need to see and manipulate counters and shapes in order to master math concepts. By providing each child with their own set of manipulatives, learning can still take place no matter the location. Using giant magnetic math tools provides everyone the chance to follow and participate in lessons being taught, that can be seen across the room or across the screen.
