Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students are right below the fourth grade math and reading levels. We are an inner city school where the average family falls in the low-income category. We are a small neighborhood Title I Public School and have only two classrooms per grade level. All the teachers, regardless of the grade they teach, have a strong relationship with all the students in the building. We do believe that it takes a village, and when the children graduate from our school, we all take pride in the fact we were all part of the process.
Our students come to school every day ready to learn in spite of the challenges they face on a daily basis.
Because of that, they inspire me to live up to their expectations and give them a reason to overcome some of those challenges and be excited to learn new things.
My Project
I am requesting various math manipulative to work with students in small groups and to introduce a new skill to help visualize math skills and understand the process of those strategies. Students will also be able to use the manipulatives during independent seat work time. Using the manipulative will allow students to move the pieces around without losing them.
Sometimes students need more than standard algorithms to help understand the process.
Using picture representation will allow students to connect from one skill to another and to actually see how the process works step by steps. It's also a lot more forms other than numbers to find the answer. We like fun in the classroom!
