Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth year NYC public school teacher in a low income neighborhood the South Bronx. I teach reading recovery, which specifically targets the lowest level readers in several 1st grade classrooms. 99% of the children in my school receive free lunch.
For this school year, I would like to make literacy fun and stimulating. I would like to be able to get several boxes of poetry magnets for my students to use to create stories, poetry and expand their vocabulary. The students can use these on magnetic boards to create their own words, stories and poems during our reading sessions. One box of magnets contains 200 words, with different nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, etc. The magnets are an excellent language building tool that helps expand their vocabularies. All of the reading recovery students are below grade level and use street slang as a standard form of speech. The magnets can help expose them to beautiful language that they might otherwise not think of when writing poetry. In addition, they can learn to spell and be able to sequence events and stories. The magnets would be a great out of the box learning tool. The magnets create a quick and hands on learning opportunity. Children don't have to be able to spell or look up the word, but instead are encouraged to read it. By reading for fun, pleasure and enjoyment, studies have shown that children are more adept at learning spelling, sentence structure and syntax, as well as pronunciations. This would be a fun and different way to learn.
