My students need magnetic letters and magnetic white boards for using a Making Words phonics activity that coincides with our Treasures Language Arts program.
Each morning, I teach a Language Arts lesson using a power point presentation of my own creation. I animated each slide to have letters flying in and out, graphics spinning round, and sounds bringing the words to life. Used to video games, this is a great way to keep their attention for learning.
I have 20 eager to learn first graders.
And, like typical first graders, they need a variety of venues in which to practice the material or they get bored. Switching from pencil and paper to magnetic letters makes this learning even more fun. Our school is a K-3 site with seven classrooms of each grade, plus a Kinder Bridge class. We are home of the Cougars!
My Project
Weekly, in a small group with me, my students practice writing words with the phonics patterns taught that week. Using these magnetic letters (with colored vowels) really makes learning fun! The activity involves moving letters around to create a new word from a previous word. The colored vowels really show the learners every word must have a vowel. After the formal lesson, the students are encouraged to create words that were not in the lesson. It is a fun and engaging way to learn.
Most children learn to read in first grade.
Phonics and spelling are foundation skills on which budding readers build. If I can send a first grader out of my door at the end of the year reading, and excited about reading, I have created a student who will blossom in future years in many curricular areas. Reading is a key aspect of learning. Being able to read well creates confidence that opens many academic avenues to explore. I like to keep learning fun. These magnetic letters will help!
