I have 26 enthusiastic kindergarten students in my class, representing a variety of cultures, languages, and socioeconomic levels. This year I have 7 languages represented in my classroom.
Our school is a public school in Southern California.
We are a progressive school and continuously educate ourselves about new and innovative ways of reaching all learners.
The last few years we have spent a great amount of time in educating ourselves and implementing Reading and Writing Workshop, as well as Word Study.
The beginning of kindergarten is filled with letter naming activities. Students engage in various hands on activities to name the letters, learn their sounds, and eventually spell words. Some of these activities, such as using the children's names to learn letters, are based on the new phonics unit created by Columbia University's Teacher's Collage. Magnetic letters are magical to my students, because they stay on the board, even when they move around. The mini magnetic white boards are the perfect size for their small hands. They easily allow students to progress from the hands on of putting magnetic letters on the board to actually forming and writing the letters.
