I teach Math, Science, and Social Studies to two groups of ten to eleven year-old students. My goal is to tap into their love of learning everyday. In reaching for my goal, every step towards their success reminds me why I love my job.
There are so many ways to solve a problem, but how we arrive at that solution is where the real learning takes place.
Everyday, my students are engaged in the exploration of and inquiry about what is possible. Lessons are introduced with a problem to solve through writing or pictures. The students work collaboratively to find the solution, but our focus is more on the process.
My Project
Our classroom is workstation based, where the students rotate through different stations every 15 to 20 minutes. This helps to keep them focused and active at the same time. Having a workstation available where the students can solve real world word problems using magnetic manipulatives, dry erase markers, and their thinking on a large blank canvas, would be extremely beneficial in the learning process.
Through collaboration, the students learn that they can accomplish so much more together as a group than alone as individuals.
Our fifth grade curriculum focuses on place value with decimals and fractions. The magnetic manipulatives will really help to deepen their understanding of these concepts. The ability to use different colored markers will help to organize their thoughts, ideas, and solutions. Having the opportunity to manipulate all of these on a large magnetic board helps them to see their different ideas come together to one solution.
