Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My four hundred and fifty kindergarten through fifth grade elementary students create a diverse community of learners with learners from many different cultural, socioeconomic and language backgrounds. Over sixty-five percent of my students come from non-native English speaking families with many arriving in the U.S. for the first time. Our student population includes many high-needs learners and over ninety percent of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch due to the families' low socioeconomic status.
Despite the challenges my students endure, they truly enjoy coming to school and learning.
They work hard and have a positive attitude. I strive to foster that enjoyment and create meaningful learning experiences for each of my students.
My Project
My students of all ages love magnet tiles. It's great to see how they collaborate to create all different types of structures. It's even more fulfilling to see students of different ages and in different grade levels collaborating with these tiles. Students are able to build a multitude of different creations including houses, castles, cars, flowers, etc. The magnet tiles also differentiate learning. Younger students can learn their colors, sort by shape, count and recognize and create 2D and 3D shapes.
All students engage in critical thinking and problem-solving skills and improve hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills when using magnet tiles.
The possibilities to build and create are endless. My students will be able to incorporate math, science and literacy into what they build. Wouldn't you want to make a safe house for the Three Little Pigs or a wall that Humpty Dumpty won't fall off? I will make these materials accessible to everyone by using them as a center during class and before and after school during STEM. With your help, students will work together to build something amazing!
