Our school is a really great place, and I am always trying to improve our learning environment to make it the best experience possible for my students.
I teach in a fifth-grade regular education, special education, and English Language Learner inclusion classroom.
I have students that come from many different backgrounds. By the time they get to fifth grade, some of them begin to realize that they are behind their classmates. It is my passion to change that and help all of them be successful.
My Project
I have some Magna-Tiles in the classroom, and my students have loved using them every year. I am asking for another set so that they can be used by more students. I am making a request of one box of Magna-Tiles and two magnetic stabilizer plates to help them learn about and investigate geometric and engineering ideas. I believe that can be fun, understandable, and engaging for all students. At the elementary age, it is monumental that students understand basic geometrics, engineering, and the experience of the engineering design process. With a strong educational foundation in the early years, students can reach great heights in advanced science and mathematics. To build a strong understanding, students must be able to manipulate their learning through hands-on activities. The Magna-Tiles and magnetic stabilizer plates help students investigate proportions, ratios, geometric terms, and they get to construct many shapes and buildings.
This project is important because my students lack hands-on manipulatives at my school.
Howard Gardner speaks of everyone possessing Multiple Intelligences, and this request would help students in the area of their multiple Visual/Spatial, Logical/Mathematical, and Bodily/Kinesthetic intelligences. These manipulatives will help many students that may have felt unsuccessful in the past to succeed. These materials would also benefit students for many years to come.
