My classroom consists of 28 students who are eager to learn! I work in a school that consists of many students who are English Language Learners. My school is often the first school that my students experience in the United States. Therefore, this being their first school in the United States for many, I think it is extremely important for them to get the absolute best experience possible. They should feel secure, comfortable, and excited to learn. It is important for my students to have a language enriched environment with as many tools and resources possible to grow emotionally and academically.
My Project
My students will use Magna-Tiles to enhance their social skills and vocabulary. My students have "choice time" (play time) a few times a week. This time is particularly important in a class with English Language Learners because students are using and learning new vocabulary words. The words that they are using are important because they are not just academic words that I am teaching them, they are words that they could use daily.
Magna-Tiles will encourage my students to use their imagination, and use academic and non-academic language.
When my students have the opportunity to build, they build things such as a zoo, mall, parking garage, etc. When I see them building these things, I use these opportunities to share new words with them that relate to what they are building. The Magna-Tiles will also encourage my students to share and work together.
