Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

This is my sixth year at the best elementary school in NYC. I have made a tradition of taking my classes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art once a year to see the wonderful, world class collection of art that it houses. I have traditionally purchased sketchbooks and art supplies for sketching on our trip. I try to make it a "day on the town" by adding a trip to McDonald's for lunch.

My students are anxiously anticipating this annual trip which their brothers, sisters and friends have taken on previous years. The museum is such an inspiration and for most of my students it is their very first experience in a real museum viewing authentic works of art. I feel honored to be the one to expose them for the first time to these wonders of the world. Fortunately, I am entitled to a free bus from the NYC department of education. I really would like to give the children art supplies and lunch as well to make the most of the experience. Its so fantastic seeing them sketching masterpieces in their little sketchbooks and feeling so proud.

I am asking a donor to please donate sketching supplies and money for lunch at McDonald's to make this a truly memorable day for my wonderful students on the their first trip to an art museum.

I always ask my students after our annual trip to the Metropolitan museum of art what the most special part of the day was for them. Assuming, due to their age, that they will say McDonald's, I always find that they say the visit to the museum and seeing the art work was the highlight. This warms my heart to bring the joy of art and museum going to a young, curious audience.
