My Students

We are a great school with 500 plus elementary students, all of whom come through my classroom twice a week. They love to learn and love to play and make music. The school itself is a wonderful place that allows students to learn in a safe and kind environment. I am very proud of our school for being innovative, and our principal supports teachers thinking outside the box. Teachers are always looking to find ways to create excitement and curiosity in their students, and I am no different in that regard.

My Project

Using xylophones is an important part of elementary music. Creating compositions and melodies while working collaboratively with classmates is critical.

In our classroom, we love to create music and play as a group!

One of our favorite ways to do that is with xylophones. Students learn about melodies and how songs are created, then we practice by creating our own multi-part xylophone piece. Using low, medium, and high pitched instruments we build up their note reading and rhythm pattern understanding by layering 2 and 3 part music. Our class goal this year is will be to play more complex pieces.

The students are great about taking turns when we play, but I would love to have more students getting 1 on 1 time with barred instruments!!

This way everyone gets a chance to make music together.
