Hello! I will be teaching 5th grade math at an extremely high-poverty school in Middle Tennessee. My students come from many different backgrounds, we have a high ESL population, and many of our students are considered at-risk students. Many of my students are visual learners and benefit from using to hands-on materials.
My dream is to create a classroom that has access to hands-on materials and high-quality manipulatives.
I want all of my students to have access to a variety of materials and not have to worry about having enough to go around.
My Project
I believe putting quality math manipulatives in the hands of my students is very powerful. These materials will help make math engaging, concrete, and most importantly more fun!
Fractions and decimals are often hard concepts for students to grasp.
Being able to touch and move manipulatives helps to bring the concepts from abstract to concrete. Many students often struggle to draw number lines and fractions, therefore having access to dry-erase number lines and fraction/decimal tiles will allow them to be accurate and precise.
Finally, students are always very engaged when playing games! The math games in my project will allow for both whole class learning as well as challenging, meaningful center time for early finishers.
