I have a wonderful group of gifted third and fourth grade students who possess unique learning styles that require a lot of movement and hands-on activities. Every day I am pushed to challenge them to become problem solvers and engaged learners.
While these bright students tested into this current class, their talents and gifts vary.
A couple of traits that they all seem to share are innate curiosities about the world around them and a need for movement and engagement.
My Project
Student engagement is essential and one way to assure this is happening in our classroom is to get students collaborating to solve challenges.
Games allow students to understand new concepts and ideas as they experiment with different options and variables.
Children need a lot of meaningful practice to internalize important vocabulary and math structures. That is why games are a perfect fit. Through games, children develop critical thinking skills, creativity, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. As I stated before, another benefit to bringing math games into the classroom is student engagement. Children really enjoy playing games and they are good tools to focus their attention. After hours of working hard these games provide students the boost of energy they need to continue the school day. But best of all, the students are learning and they don’t even know it!
