Now that we are in the second quarter, I have been able to get to know my students from a distance. I have 14 eager learners, with the possible addition of a 15th in the near future. My large urban school district still remains remote learning, for now.
Despite the fact that we are online we still participate in classroom activities in a shared way thanks to so many kind donors.
We have even been able to implement "choice centers" for 15 minutes of our day where the children get to decide which of three learning activities they'd like to engage in as we mute and unmute ourselves and ask questions of each other.
My classroom is very diverse, in fact, of my fourteen students, I have 11 different languages spoken in the homes of my students and eight of my students are categorized as English Language Learners. This makes shared common materials and experiences especially important.
My Project
Each month since we have been home, I have made packets for each of my students for home learning. Last month, I printed nearly 500 pages of at home learning materials for my students. I would like to continue to make a new packet each month, but I need your support to acquire computer ink, lamination pouches and labels to put on the materials. Computer ink will allow me to print the materials, lamination pouches will keep them durable for multiple uses and allow them to be written on and labels will help me clearly label which materials are for which activities.
With these materials, I envision making more games such as BINGO, shared journaling prompts, cards for our pattern blocks and other activities that we can participate with virtually together.
I also hope to make materials for the students to use at times when they are not live in front of the computer.
Thank you for your support during these unusual times of teaching, learning and living.
