Magical Dirt! What do young children love more than dirt? They dig, make mud, explore, sometimes even taste! And being able to make new dirt from our lunch scraps, well that would be just plain amazing!! I work with 18 young Kindergarten children, most who come from low income or non English speaking families or both. These children have arrived in my classroom with a lack of experience necessary to support them in their learning and I do as much as I can to give them rich experiences that they can use in their learning. Rich experiences give them language to use when writing personal stories and they will have been exposed to more experiences that will allow them to understand more when they listen to a story, work on a mathematical problem or attempt a science project. I would like to let these little ones actually make dirt from their lunch scraps. Recycling all our "garbage" and watching it turn to rich black compost that smells wonderful will seem almost magical and at the same time they will be learning about recycling and how tiny creatures can help change garbage to dirt. They will become more familiar with earthworms, isopods (roly polys), snails and slugs, all creatures that they see at home and wonder about. They will use this new language to write little reports, draw "realistic" pictures of creatures and contribute more to class discussions. Once we have created our dirt we will use it in our small butterfly garden to feed our butterfly plants and watch it go back into the soil. They will have observed the cycle of life and gained a new respect for our garden, its creatures and our planet. All these experiences will perfectly support our Science Standards.
