I am a 5 year old kindergarten teacher. Our students come from high poverty households. We have the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the state. Parents struggle to make ends meet and to provide for their children. Many of our students come to school having never been to preschool or even daycare. Many have been at home being cared for by grandparents or parents who themselves have limited education. Some of our children do not know how to hold a pencil or even recognize the letters in their own name. Our school is over 75% free or reduced lunch and we are a Title 1 school. We have the highest teen pregnancy rate in the state. Our district has been hit hard with budget cuts this past year and lost positions due to the cuts. These cuts made our class size increase. Higher numbers make it more difficult to spend extra time with students who may require more one-on-one time.
Being in a county that faces such high unemployment rates it is difficult for parents to help with supplies for their children. Teachers receive very little money each year to help purchase supplies for their rooms. We receive some extra help from local churches but that still falls short.
These dry erase boards will be used daily with all children. We will use these boards for many different activities. We will work with children teaching them how to hold pencils correctly, how to form letters properly and introduce them to making words and then move on to making a sentence. Most of our children come from single parent homes, are being raised by grandparents or even teenage mothers who may not have completed their education themselves. These boards will introduce children to written communication and why it is important to us.
Your help with this project will make a huge impact on these young children by giving them the power to communicate their feelings, thoughts and ideas in written form. Written language is so powerful and vital to their success in school and life. Thank you in advance for your help in making these children's lives better and for giving them the chance to express their thoughts and dreams in written form.
