Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fredrick Douglass said "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free." It is so very important to help young students learn to read and love it too! As an adult you can distinguish between fiction and nonfiction but my second graders have a hard time understanding the difference!
My students are second graders who attend their neighborhood school.
Our school community is close-knit and we have an involved group of parents. Still, our school is considered low-income because we have a high percentage of families who struggle to make ends meet and all of our students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
One of my top priorities is to get my second graders to read a lot. I want to begin the year by reading Magic Tree House series books. We need a copy of the Monday with a Mad Genius for everyone in our class so we can read a chapter each day at school and then talk about the story in groups. To help my students to distinguish fact from opinion, I want to introduce them to non-fiction companion to Magic Tree House stories Fact Tracker #19: Leonardo da Vinci. It will help them read, understand, and write about non-fiction while backing up their topic with factual information. I think the story about Leonardo da Vinci will spark their interest.
When I find books that my students really love, I want to put a bunch in their library so they will want to read.
Giving each student their own copy of fiction and non-fiction book about Leonardo da Vinci will ensure that they have a chance to read and reread these books to themselves and their siblings. Once my students figure out how much fun it is to read, they will want to keep going back to the library for more! Would you help me make vivacious readers out of my new group of second graders?
