Markers, crayons, paint, paper: all of these things make you think of happy children in school. The most joyous memories I have about elementary school are the numerous art projects we did. Now however, with severe budget cut-backs and a focus on writing as strictly with a pencil or computer I see the kids in my school not being able to do the amount of projects and thematic units that my generation did growing up. As a teacher my wallet can only stretch so far when buying my children these essential supplies, so we ask for your help. I teach third grade at Vintage Parkway School in Oakley, CA. Imagine the amount of art and expressive language my children could produce in some of our third grade themes such as animal habitats, voyages and the solar system! While three or four or my students have the financial resources to come to school with fresh supplies, the majority of them come from blue collar, working class families, who love them dearly but cannot buy different types of art sets for the various projects I envision. The materials once funded would be accessible to the entire class on an ongoing basis. Aside from the positive experience students receive from projects and hands-on activities there have also been numerous studies which show that developing skills of the arts increase test scores and more importantly comprehension. My wish is that my kids have a successful third grade as well as a successful future. Drawing, coloring and creating will greatly enhance their learning in all subject matters.
