This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach seventeen energetic, loving, amazing first graders. They walk into my classroom each morning with smiling faces and eager to learn. School is a welcoming safe environment for my students. Most come from hard working families who are barely getting by. Parents want the best for their children, and try to provide as much as possible. However, the reality is these children don't have opportunities that other children do. There just isn't enough money or time left for books, extra supplies, social activities, or anything beyond the basics. It is my mission to surround my students with an abundance of opportunities to experience the amazement of wondering, the joy of discovery, and the love of learning.
My Project
My first graders are true hands on learners. We have a wide variety of math manipulatives, but no easily accessible way to get to them. When students need hands on math materials, I have to dig them out of the closet. There is just nowhere else to store them. Students are not able to freely take math items as they're needed because of this issue.
A storage unit would solve our problem.
All math items would be easily accessed from the clear tubs. Students could freely go to the unit and choose materials. This way ensures valid hands on learning.
