Cleanliness is so important to keeping my first graders healthy and strong so that they do not miss school. The carpet that they sit on now is old and dirty. Help us get a new one for them to sit on during lesson time.
I have a class of 25 first grade students.
My students are energetic and have a passion for learning. I have two students with one-on-one aides due to special learning and behavioral needs. My students are learning to read and write expanded sentences and paragraphs. Many have made the Principal's honor role for addition facts. They attend a culturally and economically diverse K-5 school in California. Our school in non Title 1 and therefore receives no extra funding for items such as a new classroom carpet. Despite of this, our school has seen great improvement in test scores over the past 3 years, specifically in the area of math. Our staff is in the process of applying for the California Distinguished School award. We continue to strive toward increased achievement in all subject matter.
My Project
My students are in great need of a new carpet. Our rug is old and a solid gray color. The edges are falling apart and it is stained. I have tried cleaning it, but it is beyond repair. We use the rug daily for our morning routine, calendar time, singing, dancing, reading, writing, and sharing. A new and clean rug with squares on it will help classroom management as it allows each student to have their space. Right now, I use blue tape on my dirty gray rug to do this, but it needs to be redone frequently as the students sit and move the tape off of the carpet.
Having the students sit together on a rug, rather than at their individual desks, allows them to create a learning community and feel a sense of togetherness. A colorful, clean rug will be the focal point of my room and give my students a better environment for learning.
Research studies have shown that the child's environment affects their learning experience.
I need to transform my current space that has a dirty, gray carpet. A clean, colorful carpet placed in the center of my classroom will help to create this. It will allow them to be in their own space and provide them a sense of pride in their classroom. First graders still need a lot of reminders regarding hygiene. A fresh clean carpet will decrease allergens and germs in my classroom. Please help!
