My Students

Our second graders enter the classroom each day excited and ready to learn. They love to practice math, reading, and writing daily. I strive to keep their learning experiences authentic and hands on. I have found that the best way to keep my students engaged is to provide them with manipulatives and fun learning tools while they are learning.

I teach second grade at a Title I-funded school in Maryland, and my students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.

Some students receive free or reduced-price meals, some are English Language Learners, and others have two working parents and spend most of their time with a babysitter or grandparent. There is one thing they all have in common: the right to an exciting education and the ability to love learning.

My Project

When you picture a primary classroom, do you see children sitting on the floor learning? Much of our whole group learning time in second grade takes place on the floor. Last year, our school upgraded our old carpets to tile floors. The floors are beautiful and easy to clean, however, they do not offer an inviting, comfortable space for students to sit on the carpet. This year we are so excited to be back to school in person and bring back teaching practices such as story time, whole group instruction, partner work, and cozy independent reading time. This brightly colored classroom rug will offer my students a more comfortable space to sit for these activities. The large size will ensure enough space for all 21 of my students to sit without crowding each other. Colored dots will mark a clear space for each child to sit and have an assigned seat.
