Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Introducing... a curious, out-of-this world bunch of 22 kindergarteners! They are full of spirit, energy, generosity and side splitting humor! Upon entering the classroom, they embrace you and immediately adopt you. All of our visitors usually return because these 22 warm-hearted kindergartners are full of pizazz, ambition and complete joy. They have a dynamic, unforgettable personality and an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Statistics-wise...
our school is 85% English Language Learners, 85% Latino,85% Free or Reduced Lunch, and according to the state data, one of most under performing schools in the district. While the data and statistics are grim, these kindergartners are full of promise and embody the hope of closing the achievement gap. Right now, we have 0/22 readers but our goal is 22/22 readers by June 2010.
The school, the families, and the kindergartners are bright and cheery but... our rug is a completely different story. We use our rug for about 6 mini-lessons a day, 6 shares a day and for our centers. It is the focal point of our day and I call it the magic carpet because it takes us places when we read and learn. Our magic carpet is not very magical from afar or near. It is a very old, unsightly blue carpet with a few too many mysterious spots even after a deep cleaning. Sadly, we use masking tape to delineate a personal space but it is just not the same as having a new, bright, educational, fire-code carpet with a spot for everyone. The rug is the backbone of instruction.. we turn and talk, we have writer's workshop, we have our guided reading groups, we have our community meetings, we sing, we dance... we practically spend 60% of our day on the dingy blue,non-educational rug.
The magic carpet would be an amazing resource to our classroom. It would provide a colorful, clean, educational learning environment. Everyday each student would have their own personal space to focus and learn. Everyday each student would sit on a letter and key word. Imagine the difference of spending 60% of your day on a dingy, blue rug behind a piece of masking tape and spending 60% of your day sitting on a bright, clean, new rug with your very own spot. Everyday just their very own spot would teach them something wonderfully important about reading... letter identification and letter-sound correlation.
Your generosity would make it possible for my students to learn on a beautiful educational MAGIC carpet. Every week they would sit on their very own letter and word. It would be an incredible learning tool and would not only brighten our classroom but would brighten my students' spirits and love of learning letters. Our goal is 22/22 kindergartners reading by June 2010. An optimal learning environment would support our goal. I appreciate your willingness to support my students' learning and appreciate you taking the time and interest in public education. Kindergarten is one of the most magical years of a child's education. Thank you for considering "Our Magic Carpet Proposal".
