Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach an intelligent, boisterous bunch of first graders in the South Bronx of New York City who are excited about everything. Many of my students love any opportunity to create art but they rarely have the opportunity to draw or paint. My students do not have art class and my curricula allows for little artistic time. This is disappointing because I teach in a high poverty neighborhood. Most students do not have art supplies at home to experiment with and most students do not visit museums. In order to remedy the lack of art and museum time my students receive, I want to bring art into the classroom and bring my students to one of the most wonderful art museums on the planet: the Museum of Modern Art (otherwise known as the MoMA) in New York City. The program I want my students to participate in is two-part. It is called "Learning to Look." It includes one in-school lesson, and one Museum visit. In school, with a museum educator, students explore elements of art such as shape, line, color, and texture. At the MoMA students will look at art in the Museum's collection. My class would focus on animals because my students love animals and we have a science unit on animal diversity. MoMA museum educators will also encourage students to develop critical thinking skills and foster an appreciation of art by looking at art in the MoMA collection. All students will receive free return passes to visit the MoMA with their family as well. Teaching young children how to appreciate, enjoy, and create art through visiting the MoMA would truly be magical, please help us go!
